Air India has marked 50 years of uninterrupted operations to the Maldives, commemorating half a century of air connectivity between the two neighbouring countries.
The airline commenced services to Malé on 21 February 1976, becoming one of the earliest international carriers to connect the Maldives with the region. Over the past five decades, Air India has contributed to the growth of tourism, strengthened bilateral ties, and facilitated travel for thousands of Maldivians and Indians.
To mark the golden anniversary, a special welcome was organised at Velana International Airport for flight AI 2239, which arrived carrying 139 passengers. The aircraft was greeted with a ceremonial water salute upon arrival, a traditional aviation gesture reserved for significant milestones.
Passengers were welcomed inside the terminal with roses and commemorative gifts presented by staff of Maldives Airports Company Limited, creating a celebratory atmosphere reflecting the longstanding ties between the two nations.
Maldives Airports Company Limited stated that the milestone underscores Air India’s enduring contribution to the country’s aviation sector and highlights the continued strength of air links between the Maldives and India.
Air India currently operates regular services connecting Malé with major Indian cities, supporting both leisure and essential travel as demand between the two countries remains strong.
