The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that air quality across the country has worsened, with particularly poor conditions reported in the northern and central regions.

In some areas, visibility has dropped to below three kilometres, the Service added. Officials said these conditions are expected to persist for the next five days.

Seafarers and individuals spending extended periods outdoors have been advised to take necessary precautions and follow safety guidelines issued by relevant health and environmental agencies.

Maldives has been experiencing poor air quality over the past several months, with conditions gradually worsening. Air quality data published by the Meteorological Service on 29 January showed PM2.5 levels approaching 70 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³) in Malé, and around 50 µg/m³ in Hithadhoo in Addu City and Kulhudhufushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter, including dust, haze, and chemical pollutants, which can penetrate deep into the respiratory system.

The World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines recommend that PM2.5 concentrations should not exceed an annual average of 5 µg/m³, with short-term exposure limits also set significantly lower than current levels recorded in the Maldives.
