The development of Faafu Atoll’s first airport in Magoodhoo, initially launched by the previous administration, has resumed.

The development involves reclaiming 30 hectares of land for the airport and an additional 48 hectares for industrial and societal purposes. It also includes the protection and monitoring of 3,300 acres of land.

Abdullah Waheed, President of Magoodhoo Island Council, informed PSM News that work on the runway is ongoing, with the tar application currently in progress. Waheed noted that shipments of stones and other materials have arrived and that efforts are underway to establish a fire station and a new terminal at the airport. He expressed optimism that, with the current pace of progress, the airport could be operational by the end of the year.

The project has faced criticism from senior opposition figures who argue that progress has slowed due to the government’s focus on developing an airport in Nilandhoo, also in Faafu Atoll. Residents of Magoodhoo have expressed concerns about these delays. In response, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the Magoodhoo Airport development will be completed, as stated during his recent visit to several islands in Faafu Atoll.

The original plan for a 1,200-metre runway has been revised to an 1,800-metre runway. The total value of the airport development project is estimated at USD 14.98 million. Management of Magoodhoo Airport has been assigned to Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL).
