Land reclamation work has begun for the development of an airport in Th. Guraidhoo, with additional plans to carry out coastal protection measures under the same project.
The ongoing project, carried out by state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) involves reclaiming 13.80 hectares of land, constructing a 979-metre stone revetment, and building a 609-metre geobag revetment.
The total cost of the project is estimated at MVR 106.02 million. Once completed, the airport is expected to generate economic and social benefits across the atoll, supporting Guraidhoo’s role as a regional centre for trade and tourism.
With a population of 2,272, Guraidhoo is a key commercial hub in Thaa Atoll, drawing visitors from surrounding islands for business purposes. The local economy is driven by fishing, farming, weaving, and increasing involvement in the tourism sector, including a growing number of guest houses and small businesses.
