Minister of State for National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Akram Kamaluddin, has issued a response to Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to reduce rent on flats within the Gaakoshi and Old Arabiyya compounds in Male’ City, a development project initiated during the tenure of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking at a campaign rally, Dr. Muizzu, the presidential candidate for the Peoples National Congress (PNC), emphasised the importance of allocating these flats as part of social housing, making them affordable for all. He argued that residents should not face financial burdens in securing a flat.
In response to Muizzu’s remarks, Akram Kamaluddin pointed out that the flats were initially rented out at their current rates during Muizzu’s own reign as Housing Minister. According to him, this led individuals residing in these flats to resort to high-interest loans due to limited housing alternatives.
“It is regrettable that false statements are being made to influence voters. People had to turn to high-interest loans because they had no other viable housing options available. This government has aimed to provide relief to such individuals,” Akram stated.
Akram also took to Twitter to share a video of Dr. Muizzu’s speech during his time as Housing Minister, in which he argued that the pricing of the flats in Arabiyya and Gaakoshi was justified.
Akram further alleged that the cost of the flats had increased due to a “deal” implemented after Muizzu assumed the role of Housing Minister following the overthrow of President Nasheed’s government, which had caused a significant delay in the project.
