Former Member of Parliament Ali Azim has pledged to transform Male’ into a smart city if elected mayor, outlining plans aimed at creating a cleaner, safer, and more connected urban environment.
Azim launched his campaign last Thursday at Artificial Beach, announcing his candidacy for the Maldivian Democratic Party mayoral primary. He highlighted the need for greater transparency in the Male’ City Council’s financial affairs and encouraged public oversight of spending by previous administrations.
He argued that residents deserve a higher standard of urban development, stating that the city’s progress should extend beyond essential services such as drainage work, tree planting, and cemetery maintenance. He reiterated that families should be provided with a liveable and attractive environment that supports wellbeing and safety.
Azim also criticised the direction of governance since the tenure of former president Mohamed Nasheed, asserting that successive leaders have used public office for personal benefit, contributing to declining conditions in the capital.
He announced that his campaign is focused on delivering what he described as a more prosperous version of Male’, with priorities including improved parking, enhanced pedestrian access, and expanded economic opportunities for residents.
Azim’s smart city proposal includes digital access to council services, measures to strengthen public safety, and urban planning changes intended to reduce crime. He stated that the approach aims to minimise incidents of violence, theft, and robbery while ensuring that essential services can be accessed through mobile devices.
