Ali Nashath has assumed the position of Vice Chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), succeeding Ismail Habeeb, whose term has concluded.

Habeeb began his tenure with the ECM in 2003 in an administrative role and later progressed to become a member of the commission, completing two full terms. However, in accordance with the commission’s regulations, members are restricted from serving beyond two terms, leading to Habeeb’s departure after the conclusion of his second term today.

Nashath was elected to fill the vacancy left by Habeeb following a vote conducted on Wednesday. Habeeb, who also served as the commission’s spokesperson, will be succeeded in this role by the commission’s Secretary-General, Hassan Zakariyya.

In an official statement released on X, the Commission expressed gratitude to Habeeb for his dedicated service spanning 21 years. Habeeb, in turn, extended congratulations to his successor, Nashath, acknowledging his capability and technical expertise. Habeeb highlighted Nashath’s potential to modernize elections, digitalize the commission’s services, and enhance convenience for political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders.

Habeeb’s departure from the ECM coincides with the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for April 21. Additionally, the tenure of the commission’s chairman, Fuad Thaufeeq, is slated to conclude in November.
