Former tourism minister Ali Waheed has officially rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), marking a return to the political fold after a stint with the Jumhooree Party (JP).
Ali Waheed made the announcement of his return to the MDP through a post on X, today.
After 7 years and 7 days, today I have returned home to be a proud member of MDP 💛

Ali Waheed, who initiated his political career with the now-defunct Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) in 2008, later transitioned to the MDP, eventually assuming the role of its chairperson.
Expressing his pride as a renewed member of the party after seven years and seven days, Ali Waheed pledged to serve the MDP, the entire country, and the people of the Maldives with courage and diligence. Accompanying his statement was a video highlighting his previous involvement in the MDP’s political activities.
Ali Waheed was dismissed from his post following charges of sexual assault. However, in July, he returned to the Maldives after the Prosecutor General’s office dropped the charges against him.
The charges, dating back to November 18, 2020, involved allegations of sexually assaulting and harassing employees of the tourism ministry on multiple occasions. Following his departure from the country in February 2021, his passport was released upon court order.
