The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has reiterated its commitment to providing housing solutions to all 4,000 applicants of the Gedhoruveriyaa social housing scheme within the tenure of the current administration.

This statement was issued by the ministry following public allegations and a review of the recipients’ list for the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme. The ministry also announced that it would accept grievances related to the revised list of recipients.

Launched by the previous administration, the Gedhoruveriyaa social housing scheme came under scrutiny when the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) identified technical discrepancies and inconsistencies in the recipients’ list. The ACC subsequently instructed the government to address these issues before finalising the handover of deeds to the housing units.

In response to the ACC’s order, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure conducted a review of the recipients’ list, resulting in the completion and publication of an updated version. The ministry clarified that no new individuals were added to the revised list beyond those originally compiled by the previous administration, despite opposition claims that the list had been altered.

The ministry also announced that grievances could now be submitted concerning errors in the verification of documents and application forms. Once the grievance period has ended, the ministry will adhere to the guidelines set by the Gedhoruveriyaa committee of the previous administration in verifying applications for the remaining housing units.

Recipients who score the highest points in the established criteria will be awarded the remaining housing units. However, the ministry emphasised that these recipients will not be allowed to amend their original information or submit new documents.

Furthermore, the ministry assured that those disqualified from the initial 4,000 recipients’ list would not encounter additional challenges when applying for future housing schemes. Reaffirming President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s housing policy and pledge, the ministry also confirmed that all Maldivian residents in need of housing would be provided with housing solutions before the end of the current administration’s tenure.
