This declaration follows The Democrats’ decision to abstain from endorsing any candidate during the runoff election subsequent to the defeat of their candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, in the initial round of the September presidential polls.

The tweet emphasised the importance of maintaining consistency in Maldives’ foreign policy beyond electoral transitions, asserting that frequent alterations could detrimentally impact the citizens of the nation.

His sentiments coincide with the current administration’s endeavours to mend strained relations with India.

His remarks were made following his attendance at Prime Minister Modi’s historic third-term inauguration ceremony, where Nasheed also expressed satisfaction at having a Maldivian president present at the event.

Nasheed’s stance reflects his longstanding advocacy for strong ties with India, a stance that contrasts sharply with the ‘India Out’ campaign led by the opposition coalition PPM-PNC, which he vocally criticized during their tenure. During his presidency from 2008 to 2018, Nasheed fostered a relationship with India, relying heavily on the neighbouring nation for various purposes.

The situation was exacerbated by derogatory social media remarks directed at Prime Minister Modi and India by three deputy ministers. However, tensions have since eased to some extent, notably following the May visit of Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to India.
