Amendment Proposed to Reserve 33% of Parliament Seats for Women

A constitutional amendment has been proposed to reserve 33 percent of seats in Parliament for women. The amendment, put forward by Addu-Meedhoo MP and member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP), Rozaina Adam, aims to address the gender disparity in political representation.

According to the bill, reserved seats will be allocated from randomly selected constituencies by drawing lots on an equal basis.

Once women are represented in all constituencies in that order, the bill further states that the parliament will have to decide on other options as well.

The bill aims to increase women’s voice in decision-making in the interest of the people and the country and to increase the proportion of women in the political arena.
