The proposed no-confidence motion against Mohamed Nasheed, the Speaker of the Parliament, is expected to conclude soon, according to reassurances provided by MP Mohamed Aslam during today’s press conference.

In response to queries raised by the MDP parliamentary group during a press conference today regarding the no-confidence motion against Nasheed, Aslam expressed his belief that the case will likely not endure for an extended period. He also provided reasons supporting this view.

Describing the matter as highly sensitive, critical, and entrenched within constitutional complexities, Aslam highlighted the suspension of one of the state’s powers as a pivotal issue.

Further, Aslam downplayed the scale of the issue, asserting its relative significance within the broader context of the nation’s affairs.

The no-confidence motion, initially tabled in June of the preceding year, brought the House to a standstill for several days following endorsements from a total of 54 MPs.

Despite being allotted a 14-day notice, a scheduled hearing on Sunday did not take place due to the absence of Vice-Speaker Eva Abdullah, who was on medical leave.

As a result, the MDP has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking a way forward to resume parliamentary proceedings.
