Aslam: “We Dont Want To Become Climate Refugees”

During his address at the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament, Mohamed Aslam, reiterated the nation’s resolve against becoming climate refugees.

Expressing concern over the escalating threat posed by climate change, Aslam highlighted the intrinsic link between environmental preservation and societal well-being. “We don’t want to be climate refugees. We want to live in this beautiful country forever,” affirmed Aslam, underscoring the determination of Maldivians to safeguard their cultural heritage and ancestral homes.

Acknowledging Maldives’ minimal contribution to the global carbon footprint as a low-lying island nation, Aslam stressed the imperative for concerted international efforts to combat climate change. He underscored the vital role of climate protection in ensuring enduring peace and security for all.

“With a population of approximately 500,000, we dont want to lose our homes due to the impacts of climate change,” Aslam asserted. “Our cultural identity and traditions are worthy of preservation.”

In advocating for gender equality, Aslam underscored the indispensable role of women in democratic governance. Despite comprising nearly half of the population, women’s representation in the legislature stands at a mere 5%. Aslam urged for proactive measures to empower women politically and ensure their equitable participation in decision-making processes.

Furthermore, Aslam reiterated solidarity with the Palestinian people, condemning the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged extremist factions to desist from perpetrating inhumane acts against civilians. Emphasising the broader implications of the conflict on global peace and stability, Aslam underscored the imperative for concerted international efforts to resolve the longstanding crisis.
