Maldives Immigration has reminded foreign nationals residing in the country to comply with the scope and conditions of their permits, stating that any violation of the Immigration Act constitutes an offence.

The authority issued the reminder amid a series of recent arrests involving foreign nationals engaged in illegal trade activities.

According to Immigration, foreign nationals are required to remain in the Maldives strictly within the limits of the permits granted to them. The agency noted that permits will be revoked if individuals are found to be in breach of national laws or regulations. It added that joint efforts with relevant agencies are ongoing to address the issue of illegal migrants.

Authorities have identified several common violations, including working on expired visas, engaging in employment outside the approved sector, and performing work without authorisation. Immigration has also drawn attention to an increasing trend of individuals exploiting ‘open visas’ to earn substantial financial gains through employment, self-employment, or business activities beyond what their visa allows.
