The Maldivian Police have revealed that intelligence reports indicate gangs may be used to incite violence and cause property damage during a mass anti-corruption rally planned in the capital this weekend.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is scheduled to hold the rally on 3rd October at the Artificial Beach in Malé City under the name ‘Lootuvaifi’ to protest alleged acts of corruption by the incumbent People’s National Congress (PNC) administration.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, the police emphasised that the right to freedom of assembly must be exercised in strict compliance with Article 32 of the Constitution. The agency said it will prioritise providing the safety and protection required for peaceful assemblies.

However, the police allege that the MDP intends to incite violence during the planned rally, warning that such acts will not be tolerated. The statement claimed that intelligence points to a potential plan to divert from the authorised rally route, deploy groups of criminal elements into the streets, and create turmoil in Malé while causing property damage.

Police warned that such actions would undermine peace and security in the capital. The agency urged the MDP to maintain the rally as a peaceful assembly and refrain from inciting unlawful acts or any activity that could threaten public order.

The MDP has been promoting the rally for several weeks. On Tuesday, former President Mohamed Nasheed stated that the rally should not be treated solely as a gathering by a political party and invited all individuals opposed to corruption to participate in the protest.
