The government has closed 11 illegal businesses as part of an operation launched last month targeting unlawful commercial activity.
The ministry reported receiving 125 complaints following a public appeal for information on illegal businesses operated by expatriates. These reports prompted inspections of 20 cafés, 12 retail outlets, two garages, and a guesthouse, leading to the closure of 11 establishments.
The closures were primarily due to the illegal sale of tobacco products, the ministry said. The operation is being conducted by a national task force that includes the Economic Ministry, which is also investigating cases where expatriates operate businesses using Maldivians as fronts.
The ministry has encouraged the public to report illegal businesses through its hotline at 3333199 or via its official website.
