The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has reiterated its commitment to taking swift action against foreigners found conducting business illegally in the Maldives, while calling on the public to report such activities through official channels.

According to the Ministry, complaints continue to be received regarding foreign nationals operating unauthorised businesses across the country. It noted that a list of 34 sectors in which foreigners are prohibited from engaging in business has already been compiled, with these restrictions formally outlined in the Foreign Investment Act published on 3 September.

The Ministry stated that two main forms of unlawful activity have been identified. These include businesses operated by foreigners under the appearance of local management and enterprises run in sectors explicitly prohibited under the Foreign Investment Act.

Efforts to address the issue are currently underway, supported by a series of enforcement measures. The Ministry urged members of the public to report suspected violations through its website, hotline, or the Immigration Watch platform. It added that the National Taskforce on Combatting Illegal Expatriate Operations and Businesses will take immediate action against any offences reported.
