The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged travellers near Lhaviyani Atoll to exercise caution following the sinking of the vessel Nasr 3.3 nautical miles south of Alhigaa while en route from Malé to Naifaru.

Some of the vessel’s cargo is expected to drift eastward, posing potential hazards to navigation.

All five crew members aboard Nasr were rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to Naifaru Hospital. The Naifaru Council confirmed that the crew members are in stable condition.

The incident occurred amid severe weather conditions associated with the intensifying southwest monsoon. In a separate tragedy, the 100-foot landing craft Almaak Fiya capsized early on last Thursday near K. Thulhaagiri while travelling from Malé to K. Eriyadhoo. Of the seven crew members, four were rescued, two have been confirmed dead, and one remains missing. The deceased include Ahmed Shifan, 38, of GA. Dhaandhoo, while the remaining missing crew member is reported to be a foreign national.

Police and MNDF have reiterated safety precautions for those who must travel at sea, including notifying relevant authorities, ensuring vessels are equipped with life jackets, communication systems, and drainage pumps, and avoiding night travel or sailing during active weather warnings.
