An information session was held on July 8 to educate elderly residents about protecting themselves from scams and fraudulent activities. The session was held in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service’s Neighbourhood Support and ‘Isravvehinge Naadhee,’ a dedicated social centre for senior citizens.

During the session, officials provided detailed information on various types of scams, with a particular focus on online fraud and telephone scams designed to deceive victims into transferring money. Participants learned about the methods commonly used by fraudsters and how to identify suspicious behaviour.

Given that older individuals are often more vulnerable to such schemes, the session focused on practical ways for them to stay safe and protect themselves. Attendees were advised to avoid answering calls or responding to messages from unknown numbers, refrain from clicking unfamiliar links, and never share personal information, banking details, cash card numbers, or PINs. Caution was also advised when conducting financial transactions.

The Isravvehinge Naadhee described the session as a vital step towards enhancing community safety, especially for the senior population. They emphasised the importance of collaborating with law enforcement to educate the public and mitigate the risk of financial exploitation.

They also confirmed that similar awareness initiatives will be conducted for their members in the future to ensure elderly residents remain informed and protected from emerging threats.
