In preparation for the second round of voting in the presidential elections scheduled for the 30th of this month, ballot papers have been printed and are being packed to be sent off.
This upcoming round will see two candidates, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate representing the Progressive National Congress (PNC), and the incumbent President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is running as the presidential candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
An increased number of eligible voters, amounting to 282,803 individuals, are expected to participate in this second round of the presidential election. This figure reflects an additional 408 people on the voter list compared to the first round.
In accordance with electoral regulations, an extra one percent of ballots will be dispatched to each polling station to ensure an adequate supply relative to the number of voters.
The Election Commission is preparing to send the list of registered voters and the requisite ballot papers to the islands on the 27th of this month, just ahead of the election day.
During the first round of the presidential election, 574 polling stations were equipped with ballot boxes, marking the highest number ever employed for such an election.
However, in response to the long queues observed at certain polling stations, the Election Commission has taken a proactive step to address this issue. Additional setups will be established for the second round of voting to better accommodate the additional number of individuals who have registered to vote in this round.
