Bangladesh and Sri Lanka High Commissioners Present Credentials to President Muizzu

The High Commissioners of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka presented their letters of credence to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu yesterday.

The new High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, also presented his Letters of Credence to President Muizzu at the President’s Office.

He was escorted in a traditional Haiykolhu procession accompanied by the MNDF Drum and Trumpet Band.

President Muizzu formally welcomed Mohamed Rizvi Hassen as the new High Commissioner and discussed with him key areas of cooperation, including trade, the economy, and climate change. Both sides underlined the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections and agreed to explore ways to broaden cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two nations.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on 26 July 1965.

Later in the day, the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, Dr MD Nazmul Islam, presented his Letter of Credence at a ceremony held at the President’s Office. He, too,  was escorted from Republic Square in a traditional cultural procession, Haiykolhu, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band.

During the meeting, President Muizzu and Dr Nazmul Islam reflected on the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Bangladesh, highlighting deep-rooted people-to-people ties and mutual cooperation. They also discussed strengthening collaboration in agriculture, economic development, higher education, and trade and investment. Both reaffirmed their commitment to further advancing bilateral relations.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh were established on 22 September 1978.
