The Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives marked International Mother Language Day 2025 and Martyrs’ Day with a solemn and respectful ceremony.

The event, held at the Mission, paid tribute to the sacrifices of the language martyrs of 1952, whose struggle ensured Bangla became the state language of Bangladesh. The commemoration began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of messages from Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor and Foreign Advisor. A minute of silence was observed to honour those who lost their lives in the historic language movement.

Bangladeshi expatriates in the Maldives actively participated in the discussion session, reflecting on the glorious struggle of 1952 and the global recognition of 21st February as International Mother Language Day. Acting High Commissioner Md. Sohel Parvez, who attended as the chief guest, emphasised the uniqueness of Bangladesh’s language movement, which remains the only instance in history where people sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue.

He recalled the efforts of Bangladeshi expatriates and the government of Bangladesh, who played a key role in securing UN recognition of International Mother Language Day. He urged everyone to take responsibility for preserving linguistic diversity worldwide and encouraged expatriates to work towards enhancing the global recognition of the Bangla language and upholding Bangladesh’s national image.

The ceremony concluded with a special prayer for the welfare of the nation and for the departed souls of the language martyrs. As part of the celebrations, Nildoria Shilpi Goshti presented a cultural programme, which was attended by a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates residing in Malé.

A drawing and recitation competition for children was also organised, with notable participation from children of various nationalities. Mrs. Romana Razia Siddiquea, spouse of the Acting High Commissioner, attended as the chief guest and distributed prizes to the winners, recognising their creative contributions to the event.
