Bangladeshi National Remanded in Custody After Cash Seizure at VIA
Maldives Police Service has announced that a Bangladeshi national, Shahmin Islam Shagur, 32, has been remanded in police custody for 15 days following his arrest at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Sunday.
Shagur was detained after airport security discovered USD 81,030 in cash concealed inside a cereal box in his luggage.
The cash bundles, hidden within a box of Kellogg’s corn flakes, were neatly packed in tinfoil packets, which appeared to have been resealed. Shagur was scheduled to fly from Malé to Dhaka on US-Bangla Airlines.
During a remand hearing at the Criminal Court on Monday, Shagur was placed in police custody as investigations continue into potential money laundering.
