Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that the biggest challenge in the presidential campaign was not responding to the lies spread by the opposition, and that he will disclose everything he can during the second round.
These allegations centred around the claim that reelecting President Solih would result in the Maldives becoming a “state” of India.
Addressing these allegations, President Solih remarked that he believes that the people will recognise that these claims are built on deception and falsehoods and that he intends to clarify these matters during the second round of the campaign.
The first round of the elections revealed certain challenges, including issues related to voter turnout. In several constituencies, individuals who expressed support for the ruling MDP were unable to cast their votes, said Solih.
President Solih also noted that efforts were underway to establish coalitions with other political parties to strengthen their position in the upcoming round.
Expressing gratitude for the 86,151 votes he received in the first round, President Solih urged his supporters to redouble their efforts to ensure that the Maldives does not regress into violence.
In this initial round, President Solih secured 39 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Dr. Mohammed Muizzu of the People’s National Congress (PNC), garnered 46 percent, carrying them both to the second round of the presidential race.
