Blood bank services in Kulhudhuffushi regional hospital has officially begun on 1st September 2023 as part of a broader initiative of improving the services provided by the hospital.

The Khulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital stands as the primary healthcare institution serving the inhabitants of 41 islands in the Bodu Thiladhunmathi region.

The newly established service has a capacity to store up to 200 packs of blood.

The availability of a ready supply of blood at the blood bank is expected to streamline the process of conducting minor surgeries at the hospital, according to the hospital.

The blood bank will now allow voluntary blood donors to donate blood, furthermore, it will also facilitate early storage of blood of difficult to obtain blood groups.

Furthermore, the hospital has adopted an approach to blood stock management. Blood will be preserved for a specific duration, reducing wastage by monitoring and adjusting the levels of less in-demand blood groups to ensure overall safety.

The Khulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital has also reported an accelerated service delivery for children with thalassemia, with blood transfusion times slashed from 12 hours to 4 hours.
