Bank of Maldives (BML) announced today that it will take legal action against individuals who misuse the foreign withdrawal limits on debit cards, particularly those who hand over their personal cards to third parties.

In a press release, BML said it had increased debit card limits on 11 November to USD 1,000 per card for essential purposes and up to USD 3,000 for tickets, health expenses, and other approved uses.

The bank noted that some individuals have been abusing the system by using other people’s cards to withdraw cash, with one person reportedly using over 100 cards at a single merchant. Others have used cards of individuals who do not travel abroad to purchase airfare tickets.

BML stressed that handing over debit cards to third parties violates the agreement between the bank and its customers. The bank said it will take action against such misuse, impose limits on foreign withdrawals for affected cards, and restrict their use with specific merchants.

The bank also urged customers not to share their personal cards with others to prevent misuse.
