The National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) has urged the government to postpone the relocation of marine vessels from Hulhumalé Harbour until a designated and safe alternative harbour area is identified and made available.

In a press release issued on Monday, the association raised concerns over a directive announced by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on 9 April, which instructed all vessels docked in the designated areas to vacate by midnight on 14 April. HDC cited the need to prevent potential damage to vessels during upcoming land reclamation works, but did not provide an alternative docking site.

NBAM acknowledged the importance of national development and urban expansion but stressed that relocating vessels without a viable alternative poses serious operational and safety challenges. The association expressed particular concern over the timing of the directive, issued during the height of the southwest monsoon season—a period known for rough seas, strong winds, and unpredictable weather. NBAM warned that such conditions make vessel relocation and anchoring highly unsafe and significantly increase the risk to vessels, their crews, and ongoing operations.

“Moving these safari vessels without the provision of a secure and sheltered harbour puts the vessels, their crews, and the associated operations at considerable risk,” the association stated.

NBAM also highlighted the critical role of the liveaboard and safari vessel sector in the Maldivian tourism industry, noting its contributions to employment, guest experiences, and national revenue. The association cautioned that abrupt displacement without adequate alternatives could lead to vessel damage, disrupted schedules, and adverse impacts on the livelihoods of those reliant on the sector.

Reaffirming its support for national development efforts, NBAM called for thorough planning and stakeholder engagement to avoid placing undue hardship on industry partners. The association remains committed to working closely with the government to ensure the sustainable development of the Maldives’ maritime and tourism sectors.
