Bodies of Two Victims From Dhigurah Fire Repatriated to Bangladesh

Flames rise from an accommodation block for foreign workers in Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah, leaving five people dead and several others injured.

The bodies of two of the five men who died in a fire at an expatriate accommodation block in Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah have been repatriated to Bangladesh.

The High Commission of Bangladesh in Maldives wrote in Bangla on its Meta page that the remains of Saadar Ali and Shafiqul Islam would arrive in Bangladesh today. The fatal incident occurred late last Thursday night when a gas cylinder exploded while residents were preparing Suhour meals.

All five victims of the fire were Bangladeshi nationals: Raju Uddin Islam, Saadar Ali, Robin Molla, Shafiqul Islam, and Noornabi Sarkar.

Two other men, Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hussein, remain under medical care at IGMH. PSM reported the patients, aged 21 and 40, sustained severe burns and are currently treated on ventilator support.

The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, Dr Md Nazmul Hassan, visited the injured at IGMH and the deceased at the Galolhu Mortuary. The High Commission has also contacted the families of the victims to offer assistance.

According to the Maldives Police Service, they received the report of the fire at 01:57 a.m. Officers arrived on the scene a minute later to find the kitchen engulfed in flames. Police and members of the public eventually rescued those trapped inside by breaking down the back wall of the building.
