The Ministry of Construction confirmed that one lane of the existing road has been closed to allow the start of practical work. The project covers the road from the ferry terminal to Rasfannu, and was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in early April.
The Malé City Council announced a 57-day closure of a section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, extending from Republic Square to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) building, including adjacent jetty areas.
The closure, beginning today and lasting until 13 October, is part of ongoing infrastructure development efforts across the capital, particularly the upgrade of Boduthakurufaanu Magu which circles the city. The Council stated that the temporary measure is necessary to facilitate uninterrupted road improvement works in one of the most congested areas of Malé.
The project includes paving and widening 830 metres of road from the ferry terminal to the local market, installation of a drainage system, gates, road markings and signboards. The contract, valued at MVR 144 million, has a planned completion period of 455 days.
The Ministry noted that the previous government had also approved the development of the area, with the project handed over to MTCC near the end of its term. Work, however, had not commenced at that time. The current project forms part of President Mohammed Muizzu’s development initiatives.
