The Secretary General of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom), Mariyam Zeeniya, has been removed from her position due to allegations of being uncooperative in implementing the commission’s decisions.

Prior to her dismissal, Zeeniya was suspended for three days last Tuesday, an action that prompted several commission staff members to walk out in protest.

Zeeniya had previously been accused of abusing her position by intimidating and threatening a subordinate staff member, which led to an internal investigation. Additionally, she was reported to have shown a lack of respect towards the commission’s President, Safaa Shafeeq, for which she received a verbal warning.

On 18 May, a petition was submitted to the Maldives Parliament alleging that BroadCom’s president and members were obstructing staff from carrying out their duties. The petition claimed that the president and some members had disrupted the commission’s operations and violated administrative frameworks, including impeding the responsibilities of the Secretary General and directors.

In response, the commission’s president stated that these concerns had not been raised with the members. Safaa Shafeeq further asserted that she and other members have maintained close relations with the commission’s staff and were unaware of the issues mentioned in the petition.
