The Secretary-General of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), Mariyam Zeeniya, has been suspended for three days for failing to cooperate in the implementation of the commission’s decisions.

The suspension, which begins today, requires Zeeniya to submit a written response during the suspension period. Broadcom stated that the disciplinary action was taken due to her dereliction of duties as outlined in the Broadcom Act and her failure to support the administration of the commission. She was also found to have failed to respect or cooperate with decisions made by the commission.

The action follows an investigation into several complaints lodged against Zeeniya. Allegations included claims that she was deliberately emotionally abusive towards a commission staff member and that she acted in a manner deemed openly disrespectful towards the commission’s president, Safa Shafeeq. According to Broadcom, Zeeniya issued a verbal response to these allegations.

Her suspension comes shortly after a separate petition was submitted to the Parliament, accusing the commission’s president and several other members of emotionally abusive conduct towards staff and of obstructing staff from carrying out their duties.
