The government’s chief spokesperson, Mohamed Shaheeb, clarified that the approval of cabinet ministers and the approval of ministry mandates have consistently been conducted as separate processes.
This statement comes in the wake of parliamentary proceedings today, where the motion to approve the cabinet of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was sent back to the committee by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam.
Aslam, referring to the committee’s report on the motion, deemed it incomplete and returned it for further review, effectively delaying the approval for cabinet ministers.
When questioned about the parliamentary developments, Spokesperson Shaheeb refrained from commenting on the proceedings but highlighted the longstanding practice of separating cabinet and mandate approvals since 2008. He also mentioned ongoing government efforts related to ministry mandates.
The approval of the cabinet ministers was on the agenda for today’s session. However, Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain, during a point of order, pointed out the incompleteness of the committee’s report.
She argued that a vote could not be called for the approval of the cabinet without a definitive decision on the mandates, which the current administration had not submitted for parliamentary review within the stipulated 30 days of establishing the new ministries.
MP Hisaan emphasised that the committee’s report lacked a thorough examination of mandates and failed to provide reasons for granting or denying approval to individuals and outlining their responsibilities.
Speaker Aslam, after accepting the point of order, engaged in discussions with the majority and minority leaders.
