Practical construction work on a causeway linking Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll to the island’s newly dredged land area has officially begun.
A total of 25 hectares of land were reclaimed in Maafushi in 2021. The new land mass was created separately from the main island and will now be connected through the causeway under the current project.
The inauguration ceremony for the causeway construction was held on 1 March and was attended by Member of Parliament Hussain Riza Adam, State Minister for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ismail Hameed and Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Mohamed Jamsheed.
The project involves the construction of a 137-metre causeway to connect the existing island with the reclaimed land. The contract for the project was awarded to MTCC at a cost of USD 2.29 million, and the work is expected to be completed within 365 days.
The causeway is intended to support Maafushi, a popular local tourism destination, by improving transportation access. MTCC stated that portions of the reclaimed land will be allocated for residential, industrial and commercial development.
The project is also expected to improve the movement of goods to and from the island and contribute to strengthening the local economy by supporting business activities and logistics operations.
