Child Abuse Cases Remain High in Maldives, Ministry Reports

The Ministry of Social and Family Development has reported a worrying rise in child abuse cases, with 93 incidents recorded in July alone.

Of these, 24 involved sexual abuse, 21 were cases of physical assault, and 17 concerned child neglect.
Domestic violence also remained prevalent, with 57 cases reported during the same period. The Gender Ministry recorded 49 cases affecting women and eight affecting men, including one case of rape, seven cases of sexual assault, 29 cases of physical assault, 13 cases of mental abuse, and individual cases of negligence, sexual harassment, economic abuse, and intimidation.
The trend of rising child abuse continues, following 97 cases reported in May. As of July, 152 children were in state custody, comprising 82 boys and 70 girls. During the month, six children were taken into care, while one child was reunited with their family and another was adopted.
