In an interview with Al Jazeera, President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives expressed his appreciation for China’s foreign policy, emphasising its stance of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations.
This marks his first interaction with the international press since his victory in the presidential runoff election on September 30.
Muizzu, who secured 54 per cent of the votes, defeating the incumbent president, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, spoke highly of the longstanding relations between the Maldives and China, which he believes have paved the way for the nation’s development.
The President-elect emphasised his commitment to fostering positive relationships with all countries, signalling a desire for diplomacy that respects national sovereignty.
One prominent aspect of Muizzu’s campaign revolved around the expulsion of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, which he considers a potential threat. He expressed his intention to initiate efforts to address this issue within the first week of his presidency.
It’s important to note that Muizzu has rejected the international press’s characterisation of him as a “pro-China” leader.
Instead, during his victory rally, he described his administration’s foreign policy as “pro-Maldives,” emphasising their intention to foster relations with foreign governments that respect the Maldives’ sovereignty.
