In a handover ceremony at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) in Malé, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin, presented the air conditioners to the Minister of Education, Dr Ismail Shafeeu. While the specific number of units has not been disclosed, the Ministry of Education confirmed that these air conditioners will be installed in CHSE’s Hulhumalé branch, improving classroom comfort for students and teachers alike.
The Cool School project was launched in June at Maafushi School with the goal of creating comfortable learning environments across the Maldives. Minister Shafeeu previously noted that the introduction of air conditioning would increase operational expenses by 38 percent; however, approximately 30 percent of the energy required will be sourced from renewable energy.
The initiative involves both government support and contributions from private individuals, focusing particularly on schools where solar panels can be installed to offset energy consumption.
In addition to the government-led project, some schools have started installing air conditioners with support from parents and local communities. The Education Ministry hopes that the Cool School project will provide students with a conducive learning environment while promoting sustainable energy use across Maldivian schools.
