Civil Court Orders Adeeb to Pay Remaining MVR 1 Million Within 30 Days
The Civil Court has ordered former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor to pay MVR 1 million owed to the state within the next 30 days.
The ruling, issued yesterday by Judge Ahmed Rasheed, concludes a case filed by the Attorney General’s Office on 14 August 2022, aimed at recovering the outstanding amount. The legal proceedings spanned over two years before reaching this resolution.
Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million in October 2020 as part of a plea agreement with the Prosecutor General’s Office. He had pleaded guilty to seven charges. Of the imposed fine, MVR 1 million was paid at the time, leaving the remaining half outstanding.
During the court hearing, Adeeb’s lawyer highlighted challenges in settling the remaining amount in one instalment, but the prosecution maintained that the payment must be completed within the stipulated 30-day period.
Adeeb’s original sentence, which included 20 years of imprisonment and the fine, was significantly reduced during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. The reduction, which shortened Adeeb’s sentence to just four days, attracted widespread criticism and raised questions about the decision-making process.
Adeeb had spent much of his initial sentence under house arrest due to health issues before his eventual release.
