Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef emphasised that climate disasters do not wait for political negotiations in his keynote address at the Climate Change Forum, held on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2025.
According to the President’s Office, Latheef stressed that rising temperatures recognise no borders, and storms do not align with economic cycles. He underscored the need for proactive leadership in mitigating climate impacts and managing crises. He called on major economies to align their actions, honour their climate commitments, and acknowledge that global stability depends on trust rather than isolated efforts.
The Vice President asserted that climate considerations must now be central to all government decisions. He urged that the impact on the climate and environment should be the first consideration in any policy decision—be it social, economic, or financial. He also called on the international community to move beyond pledges and take concrete action.
The forum was attended by Amna Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE, and Max Andonirina Fontaine, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Madagascar, among other dignitaries. Vice President Latheef was accompanied by a high-level Maldivian delegation.
During the World Governments Summit, Latheef also took part in the Plenary Session of the Global Government Excellence Award. He departed for the event on Sunday, 9 February.
