Committee Backs Fuad Thaufeeq as New Ambassador to Thailand
The former chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), Fuad Thaufeeq, has received the endorsement of the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee for his appointment as the Maldivian ambassador to Thailand.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s nomination of Fuad for the diplomatic role was formally presented to the Parliament on 25 November. Following a review, the Foreign Relations Committee concluded on Tuesday that Fuad is qualified for the position, granting their unanimous approval with nine members voting in favour.
Fuad’s tenure at the Elections Commission ended on 23 November after completing the maximum two five-year terms. He was first appointed to the ECM in 2008, serving as a member of the Maldives’ inaugural Elections Commission following the adoption of the new Constitution. His terms spanned from 2008 to 2014 and later from 2019 to 2024.
In addition to his work at the ECM, Fuad has held roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Secretariat, bringing extensive experience to his prospective diplomatic post.
