A new committee is slated to be established within the President’s Office to accelerate the progress of the Velana International Airport (VIA), announced Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the President-elect, following discussions with business leaders last night.
Muizzu, outlining the committee’s formation, highlighted its inclusion of key officials and stakeholders. Its primary objective will be to oversee the daily advancements of VIA’s development, ensuring prompt actions are undertaken.
“We have seen significant success in the completion of the bridge, and it is our aspiration to conclude the VIA project by the stated timeline,” Muizzu expressed during the discussions.
Emphasising the pivotal role of VIA in the Maldives’ thriving tourism sector, Muizzu underscored the urgency, stating, “Waiting until the projected completion in July 2025 is not viable.”
The announcement heralded an accelerated timeline for the VIA completion, approximately eight months ahead of the current estimations. Muizzu disclosed that preliminary dialogues have commenced with pertinent stakeholders, underscoring proactive steps.
Expressing personal commitment, Muizzu expressed a desire to inspect the progress of VIA in the days leading up to his official assumption of office. His resolve remains firm towards achieving the completion of VIA by the forthcoming tourist season next year.
The committee’s establishment and Muizzu’s expressed determination mark a significant drive towards expediting the completion of the Velana International Airport, vital for the country’s tourism sector.
