The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has disclosed that the reclamation efforts at K. Gulhifalhu is presently underway.
A substantial amount of 16.9 million cubic meters of sand has been successfully extracted, nearing the intended goal of 18 million cubic meters.
The commencement of physical operations for shore protection at the southern border of K. Gulhifalhu was instigated by Boskalis Westminster Contracting Limited on the 24th of March 2024.
The designated timeline for the completion of the Gulhifalhu reclamation and revetment operations is earmarked for conclusion by the end of October 2024.
The Supreme Court issued an interim order on February 15th to delay the execution of the High Court’s decision to pause the dredging operations at K. Gulhifalhu.
The High Court’s decision to pause the dredging operations at Gulhifalhu came in response to a file lodged by environmental activist Humaida Abdul Ghafoor in 2021. The complainant raised concerns about the purported environmental repercussions of the dredging work being conducted in the area.
Subsequently, the prosecution lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court, urging for an interim order to halt the implementation of the High Court’s ruling.
