Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has maintained its stance on potential repercussions for breaches in the agreement with former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as he re-enters the political arena.

Yameen, the leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and a convict on corruption charges, has resumed active involvement in political activities despite his legal status.

Yameen was convicted on charges of money laundering and bribery linked to the sale of V. Aarah on December 26, 2022, resulting in an 11-year prison sentence.

However, on October 1, following the victory of PPM-PNC’s Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the Maldivian presidential election, Yameen was transferred from Maafushi Prison to his residence in Male’ City.

MCS has relaxed the terms of Yameen’s confinement. Initially permitted to leave home solely for medical purposes, the service later extended permissions to include exercise and pre-approved social interactions.

Yameen has leveraged these newfound liberties to engage in political activities, notably addressing gatherings at the PPM headquarters on Sunday and Monday.

However, such actions conflict with the Maldives Prisons and Parole Act, which prohibits convicts from participating in political affairs.

Criticism has emerged against the MCS, questioning whether Yameen is being granted preferential treatment or is considered above the law. When pressed for comments regarding the service’s stance on Yameen’s actions, an MCS spokesperson reiterated their prior statement, affirming that action would be taken if Yameen violates the terms of the agreement.

Despite persistent inquiries, the spokesperson declined to disclose whether Yameen had breached the agreement or if the service was pursuing action against him.
