President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met yesterday with the Island Councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and heads of local institutions from Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo, and Goidhoo in Baa Atoll to discuss pressing development needs.
In Fulhadhoo, the meeting took place at the Fenaka Fulhadhoo Branch office. Council members raised concerns over coastal erosion, water and sanitation facilities, and the need for affordable accommodation for workers travelling to the island. They also called for laboratory services at the health centre, an outdoor volleyball court for youth, and upgrades to the harbour and electricity grid.
In Fehendhoo, discussions at Fehendhoo School focused on erosion, levelling the futsal court, constructing a modern-standard volleyball court, and allocating land. The council noted that the island’s bridge had tilted to one side, requiring urgent attention. They also requested faster completion of water and sewerage works, the construction of a new mosque, and the appointment of an additional imam.
In Goidhoo, the meeting at Goidhoo School centred on upgrading the health centre, relocating Fenaka Corporation’s office from a residential area, and modernising the electricity grid. Council members emphasised the need to provide electricity to the tourism zone, promote eco-tourism, and address space shortages at the school, including the stalled staff room project and defects in the electrical system. They also sought updates on the multipurpose hall and sports arena.
President Muizzu assured all three councils that the Government would review their concerns and work towards practical solutions. Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from State-Owned Enterprises, present at each meeting, provided updates on ongoing projects for the respective islands.
