The countdown was officially launched by Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), during a ceremony held in front of the airport’s VIP lounge. A section of the new terminal is scheduled to open on 26 July, and according to airport officials, passengers can expect a range of service upgrades. Among the enhancements are self-check-in kiosks, baggage drop-off counters, and a fully automated baggage handling system.

The terminal also introduces six newly built aerobridges, marking a significant improvement in passenger convenience. Currently, travellers are required to walk through public areas after leaving the terminal to board their aircraft. With the aerobridges, passengers can board directly from the terminal to the plane.
