A local court has extended the custody of a man accused of making death threats against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Facebook, after the president reiterated his support for severe punishments, including the death penalty, for drug traffickers.
The suspect, identified by police as Maseeh Moosa from Malas, Th. Thimarafushi, was taken into custody following a Facebook post in which he allegedly threatened to kill the president. Police have also seized his mobile phone as part of the investigation.
The arrest came shortly after President Muizzu publicly renewed his call for stricter penalties against those convicted of drug smuggling and dealing, including the implementation of the death penalty. In a post shared previously on X, the president argued that capital punishment should be enforced in serious drug cases, similar to how some other countries handle such offences.
