A magistrate court in a northern island has ordered a man to pay more than MVR 1 million to his former wife after she proved that she had used her own funds to develop property on land owned by him during their marriage.
The woman filed a civil lawsuit seeking MVR 1,026,440, stating that she had spent the amount to build a house on land registered under her then husband’s name. In addition to the compensation, she also requested that the court grant her a share of the land.
The case was filed three years ago and proceeded without the participation of the husband. According to the court’s judgment, the man failed to respond to any court summons or submissions related to the case, prompting the court to proceed and issue a ruling in his absence in March.
The magistrate court ordered the man to pay the full amount of MVR 1,026,440 to his former wife within two weeks. However, the court did not issue a ruling on the woman’s request to obtain a share of the land where the house had been built. The decision was delivered by the Chief Magistrate of the island’s Magistrate Court.
