Court Releases Suspect in Fatal Sinamalé Bridge Motorcycle Crash Under Strict Conditions
The Criminal Court has ordered the release of a 19-year-old man arrested in connection with a fatal motorcycle crash near the Sinamalé Bridge, subject to strict conditions.
In its order, the court stated that investigators had presented evidence establishing reasonable suspicion of the alleged offence. The defence argued that the incident was not intentional and occurred while two friends were travelling on a motorcycle. The suspect expressed remorse, and his lawyer requested that the court grant release under stringent conditions.
The Maldives Police Service informed the court that, given the injuries sustained by the suspect, it did not object to his release provided he complies fully with strict conditions and cooperates with the investigation.
After considering the submissions from both sides, the court decided to release the suspect from custody under specific conditions. The court did not publicly detail those conditions.
Police confirmed that the crash occurred at approximately 1:39am on Wednesday, when a motorcycle lost control near the Sinamalé Bridge and struck the pavement.
At the time of the collision, the 19-year-old Maldivian man was driving the motorcycle, while a 16-year-old Maldivian was riding pillion. Authorities transported both to hospital for treatment.
Police said the 16-year-old died while receiving medical care.
The Maldives Police Service also stated that the motorcycle was being driven by an individual who did not hold a valid driving licence. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
