The Criminal Court has ordered the remand of Hussain Sunny Umar for 30 days in connection with child sexual abuse allegations.
The Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) said it submitted a request to the Criminal Court on Monday to detain Sunny as part of the ongoing investigation. The court granted the request, and the PG noted it intends to seek further extensions and request that he remain in police custody until the end of his trial, in line with investigative findings.
According to the Maldives Police Service, officers first questioned Sunny at the Family and Child Protection Department upon his return from abroad on Monday, after which he was released. Police later detained him at the airport as he was preparing to board an outbound flight, with local media reporting he had been attempting to travel to Sri Lanka. Police have confirmed the arrest and said the investigation is ongoing, but have not disclosed further details.
