The Criminal Court has remanded a 27-year-old man from Hdh Nolhivaranfaru in custody pending the outcome of his trial after he was accused of attacking a police officer with a sharp-edged object.
The man is facing a charge of assault with a sharp-edged weapon. According to the court order issued on Thursday, police alleged that he attacked an officer using such a weapon.
During the remand hearing, the suspect, who has a prior criminal record, informed the court that he intended to appoint legal counsel.
In ordering his continued detention, the court cited the requirements of due process under the Act on Prohibition of Gang Crimes and Other Offences. The court also noted that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to establish reasonable suspicion, including statements from responding officers and the injured officer, photographic evidence of the injuries sustained, and details of the suspect’s criminal history.
Assaults on law enforcement officers have been reported periodically. In a similar incident in late December, three individuals with prior criminal records were arrested in Malé in connection with the assault of a police officer.
