Customs Expands Duty Exemption up to MVR 10K for Personal Imports
The Maldives Customs Service will extend the duty exemption for goods imported for personal use, starting from 1st July 2024.
The previous cap of MVR 6,000 for duty-free imports has been increased to MVR 10,000 based on the Free on Board (FOB) value.
The Customs authority clarified that this exemption applies exclusively to general customers and travellers importing goods for personal use. Items with an FOB value below MVR 10,000 will be exempt from duty.
For goods exceeding an FOB value of MVR 10,000, a goods declaration must be submitted. The duty will be calculated after deducting MVR 10,000 from the total value. Similarly, goods deemed as commercial quantities, even if valued under MVR 10,000, will require a declaration, and duty will be applied to the FOB value.
Certain items, such as prescribed medicines up to a six-month supply, will continue to be duty-exempt. Couriers and postal consignments, each with a separate tracking number, are also eligible for duty exemption.
However, multiple consignments with different tracking numbers under a single consignee will be treated as one shipment, subject to the MVR 10,000 cap.
